How to Become a Guitar God

Isn’t that what every aspiring guitar player wants? To be a guitar god! Maybe you got inspired by watching a skillful fingerstyle guitar player on Youtube. Or maybe you just listened to your favorite classical rock solo for the hundredth time.

Now you want to learn your way around the fretboard. If you are a complete beginner then you are going to have to learn one of the most important lessons and that is patience. Get it through your head that it will take a long time to really become a skillful guitar player. You want to play your guitar smoothly. You want to play with feeling. You want people to listen to your music and be floored by your performance.

So now what? well there are many ways to learn guitar. One way is to take online guitar lessons. There are all sorts of courses, video lessons, and tab charts you can look at. I recommend you first learn and master the basics. It will be difficult to play anything on guitar at first because your hands have not adjusted to playing.

You will have to toughen up those finger tips and stretch them out to form barre chords. It will feel awkward and even painful at first but it is the only way you will progress quickly. Don’t practice too much too soon. But rather for a half hour each day. Then you can have longer practice sessions as your hands adapt properly.

The basics of guitar include the major and minor chords. Learn these right away as it will give you the most basic understanding of the fretboard. Then you can learn some guitar theory such as the CAGED method. Lots of great guitar players never bothered learning guitar theory because the truth is that having a deep understanding of the fretboard will not make you sound better.

Listening and playing music will. The more you practice the better you will sound. You can learn theory if you would like to speed up the process of learning such skills as improvising and coming up with your own arrangements. But the skill you should really get into after the basics is playing by ear. This is also known as transcricing music.

Why limit yourself to just a guitar player when you can refer to yourself as a musician. Musicians have to practice translating music for hours and hours. Get the basics down then it is really all about listening and playing along.

It takes a long time to really get down playing by ear but very satisfying once you reach that point. You will be able to play almost anything just by listening to it.

Online Guitar Lessons for Beginners

There is a lot to learn with guitar. When you learn something new whether it be guitar or even how to get good at a video game you can study from other skillful players on top of practicing so that you speed up the process of learning.

Or you can go through all of the trial and error yourself which takes longer but at least then you are more original. That is why I recommend taking lessons. The internet has a wealth of information on how to play whether you watch video lessons on Youtube or you learn by reading tabs and looking up chord charts.

At first you will want to get the basics down just like with anything else. You need to get your fingers used to pressing down the strings. It may hurt at first especially when you try to make certain chords and have to stretch out your fingers.

Then there is more advanced stuff like playing the guitar by ear and improvising. If you really want to get this type of stuff down you may want real lessons from a teacher. Playing by ear can come naturally but improvising may be a skill you should obtain with a good teacher.

You can learn on your own just by listening to music and playing along nonstop. I would recommend studying theory as well and how it applies to the fretboard of a guitar. That way you have a better understanding of where the notes are this can be the basis of improvisations or in other words coming up with your own arrangements to songs.

This is advanced stuff that usually takes players years to get good at. You may hear that good players got good after tens of thousands of hours of practice which is not over exaggerated. That is why it is best to start soon.

Don’t get discouraged though. There is a good reason why there are not many people good with musical instruments. It takes a lot of time and effort and only the truly dedicated ones will impress those who are not that into it.

Music is a very interesting thing to get into. Imagine being so immersed with guitar that you can hear a song and know exactly how to play it within minutes of listening. That takes time. It is known as playing by ear and feel rather than looking up the guitar tabs or sheet music.

Reading tabs and sheet music are a couple of great skills to possess. Tabs are easy to learn as it only takes a few minutes to get down but sheet music will seem very foreign at first.

If you are just starting out then I recommend learning from an online guitar course such as Jamorama which you can learn more about inside this Jamorama review.
